Dunphy, Verda

Verda Dunphy, of Rocky Mountain House, AB, passed away peacefully on April 13th, 2021, after a courageous battle with COVID-19.

Verda Marie Andersen was born in Edmonton, AB on December 16, 1958. She lived in many places across Alberta, before settling in Rocky Mountain House. Verda had her son Dillon, who later blessed her with grandchildren Nolan and Hannah. She was married to her doting husband, John Dunphy, on November 4th, 1995.

It is impossible to adequately describe Verda’s amazing qualities and life in a few short sentences, so please consider this a brief highlight reel. Verda was incredibly friendly, generous, and hardworking. She always found the time for conversation with those who crossed her path. Verda spent much of her downtime supporting those around her and was always available to lend a helping hand. She had an incredible passion for plants, which was demonstrated in her flourishing gardens and lavish house plants. Verda also had a special passion for all animals, which was reflected by the dogs and rescue cats her and John welcomed into their home. Verda had a feisty, firecracker personality, which brought joy and laughter to those around her. All of Verda’s amazing qualities were welcomed by so many loving friends, colleagues, and family members.

We encourage all who mourn Verda to practice her best qualities in her memory; such as honesty, generosity, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, a great sense of humor, and unrelenting and unconditional kindness and love. Further, as she encouraged her relatives to do before her passing, please respect COVID-19 protocols, socially distance, wear a mask, and protect your fellow community members.

Verda is survived by her husband John; son, Dillon; grandchildren Nolan and Hannah; dog Borris; cat Willow, parents Max and Mary, siblings Chris (Laurie), Glen (Janet), Runa (Joe), Martha (Byron); nieces and nephews Mary, Christian, Ben, Taylor, Jordyn, Jaclyn, and Jake; great-nephews Brantley, Bryson, and Logan; and many other loving relatives, friends, and colleagues. The loss of Verda is immeasurable and painful, but we take solace in knowing that the world is certainly a better place for having her in it.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. To protect the health and wellbeing of the people who want to celebrate Verda’s life, we will be hosting a small, in-person service for immediate family. However, the event will include an online live-stream, as well as recording, for those who want to attend but cannot do so in person.

Dallas Becker:

Dear Mary, Max and Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear from my sister Cheryl, that Verda passed away. My high school memories of Verda's great energy and bubbly, happy disposition are qualities that did not recede. Years later, 2008-2013 when I was spending more time in RMH helping Mavis and Ken, I would see Verda in town and she was still emitting warmth and wonderfully positive energy with smiles.
May you have all the support that you need right now and may all the memories you have of time spent with Verda allow your hearts to move thru this challenging time.
Sending all of you heartfelt condolences.

Georgia Howard :

My dearest Andersen clan
The passing of beautiful Verda makes my heart ache. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that when I first met Verda as a youth I was a little intimidated but it didn’t take long to love her for the freewheeling independent individual she was. Without Verda in my life I probably wouldn’t have watched The Last Waltz thinking it was a Fred Astaire movie and would have missed an incredible movie about one of the best bands ever. Verda’s generosity and bubbly effervescent personality will be missed by those that hold her dear.
Thinking of you always

To John, Dillon, Max and Mary, Chris, Glen, Runa, Martha and the rest of the Andersen family, my deepest sympathy and heartfelt sorrow to all of you for your loss of a mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and most of all one of the best people that I got to call friend while going to high school and living close to each other in Rocky. We got into a lot of trouble in those days. We had a close group of friends in high school, with Verda one of best. Verda was a very likeable person and had a great sense of humor with all the people that she came in contact with or knew throughout her short life. It was always great to stop for a chat with her when she worked at Co-op and later at Sobey's bakery. For that I am glad to have known her. May you all cherish your fond memories and stories you have of Verda and keep them close to your heart moving forward. I will miss you my friend. R.I.P. Love Larry Holkestad.

Warren and Diana Randall:
