Numan, Nellie Helena
December 29, 1930 – July 23, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nellie Helena van Staalduinen (Numan) on July 23, 2021 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, at the age of 90.
Nellie was born December 29, 1930 in Rozenburg, Netherlands. Her parents were Bart and Lena and she was the oldest of 8 children. Nellie's first job was working as a nanny in England and New York. In 1951 Nellie and her entire family got the opportunity to immigrate to Canada. Her parents sold the family farm, boarded a ship and sailed to Halifax, Canada - then endured a long train ride to Taber, Alberta where her dad worked on a farm.
During her first year in Canada she met Steven Numan and they eventually relocated to Calgary. Nellie was employed as the elevator girl at the Hudson's Bay store and Steve was a truck driver. Nellie and Steve were married on September 28, 1952, in Lethbridge, Alberta. A couple of years later they moved to Three Hills, Alberta, and they had their first two children. Later they moved to Rocky Mountain House and were able to purchase some land and start the family farm, this is where they had their third child. Nellie and Steve ran a successful chicken operation and supplied eggs to stores in Rocky and the surrounding area. After many years of hard work, they earned a well deserved retirement and enjoyed travelling. Nellie will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her amazing baking, and her positive outlook on life. Nellie enjoyed socializing: cabarets, dances, the Legion, church functions, and coffee with friends were her favorite hobbies.
Nellie was the wife of Steve Numan, mother to Helen, Frank (Debbie), Michael (Nancy). Nellie's siblings were Ina, Emma, Art, Casey, Marion, Bart, and Gerrit. Nellie had 4 granddaughters: Danielle, Samantha (Wesley), Shannon and Mackenzie; 4 step grandsons: Kody, Tyler (Julia) Kassidy and Wayde (Sonya); and one great granddaughter, Reese Ellie.
Nellie was predeceased by her parents Lena and Bart, sister Marion, husband Steven Numan, and her daughter Helen Numan.
A Celebration of Life was held at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, on July 30, 2021.
Memorial donations in Nellie's memory may be made to the Rocky Mountain House Health Centre.

Barb and Rick Artzen:
To Frank/Deb and Michael./Nancy. Your mom was my "other mother" and I loved her. She and mom met when mom was pregnant with me, so she was a constant in my life from my first day. I will miss her, but I'm so glad for you that you had such a lovely mom for as long as you did. My condolences to your families who will miss their grandma. Love Barb.

Sincere condolences to the Numan family. Nellie was a very sweet, kind lady that I always enjoyed being around. I have very fond memories of her growing up and helping her and Steve with washing eggs. When I moved back to Rocky several years ago she came to visit me at work and we had some wonderful conversations.
Such a sweet, sweet soul.
So very sorry for your loss. Thinking of you all.

Although it’s been many many years I fondly remember Aunt Nellie always Greeting us with big warm hugs whenever we went to the farm for a visit. I would always look forward to going for these visits because even though I loved running around the farm, how he’s ended up in the kitchen having some extra snacks.
