Obituary

Erickson, Audrey Joyce

1933 - 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Audrey Joyce Erickson (nee Driol) on July 22, 2020, with her children at her side. Joyce was born February 22, 1933 in Calgary, Alberta. She grew up in Torrington, AB with her siblings Wally, Larry, and Doreen. At the age of 15, she moved to Calgary to work at her aunt and uncle’s grocery store. While living in Calgary, her sister introduced her to Elmer Erickson, and it was love at first sight. Joyce and Elmer were married on June 16, 1956 and lived in Red Deer until 1968 when they moved to the Bingley area near Rocky Mtn House. In 1991 they sold the farm and moved to Rocky. Joyce and Elmer were married for 54 years.

Joyce was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many people during her 87 years on earth. She was predeceased by her husband Elmer, her brother Larry, and sister Doreen. Joyce is survived by her brother Wally (Sheila) Driol from Calgary, her sister Joanne (Ron) Slugoski from Sherwood Park, her children Kelly (Vicky) Erickson from Rocky, Douglas from Edmonton, and Janet (Vince) Kittelson from Red Deer. She is also survived by her grandchildren Brett, Krista, Eric, Lauren, Jakob, Lenna, and Amaya, and great grandchildren Kamryn and Callie.

Joyce had an extremely competitive nature, a sharp sense of humour, and enjoyed life to the fullest. She was an avid gardener, loved knitting, reading, and watching sports of all kinds. She spent her last months at the Good Samaritan Society (Clearwater Centre) in Rocky.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Bredenoord and the staff of the Rocky Mountain House Health Centre and the staff at the Clearwater Centre for their amazing care and attention.

Those who wish to make a memorial contribution in Joyce’s name may do so to the Compassionate Care Hospice Society or the Palliative Care at the RMH Health Centre.

A service will be held on August 12 at 1:00 pm at the Chapel of the Rocky Funeral Home, Rocky Mountain House, AB. If you are unable to attend due to COVID 19, Mom will know you attended in spirit. It is recommended that all attendees wear masks.

Condolences

Elaine (Lee) & Everett Gusek:

Kelly, Janet & Doug:
Condolences to you all.
Joyce was a great lady with a keen sense of humor. She always put a smile on your face.
When she first moved to Bingley area, we wondered how she was going to be a farmers wife. She had all the city ways. But she proved us wrong.
Joyce was always there to help with events around Bingley Community Centre. She was a real treasure and could always turn a frown upside down.
She will be greatly missed.
Hugs to you all.

Betsy & Stan:

Jack & Carolyn Leslie:

Your Mom was a very special lady. Her sense of humour & quick wit was part of what made her special. Her & Jack had a little game they played each trying to out do the other & not laugh at each other’s jokes. Many happy memories with both your Mom & Dad. Blessings to all of you & sorry we will not be at her service but our thoughts & prayers will be with you that day. Love to you all!

Stewart Stephanson:

I’m sad to read of the passing of Joyce
But, I’m equally happy to have met this amazing person, and her husband Elmer.
1968, the year they moved to the farm
in the Bingley district, is the same year
I began employment at the gas utility
in Rocky. I still recall the day, Ken Wynn and myself travelled out to the Erickson farm to discuss installing natural gas service to their farm.
A high pressure gas line ran through the property close to the building site.
Contracts were signed, and service soon was in place. For the next 23
years I often was the service man
attending to check the meter and provide customer service. I got to know this couple in a way I will always appreciate. If the call was at a coffee break in the kitchen when I entered to
check meter in the basement, there was always another cup on the table and invitation, sit down, have a cup,
and I always did ! Many happy memories remain of those times,
the humour they both obtained, the obvious special relationship ship they
shared with each other, and the willingness to let me be included.
Upon moving into town, I often made stops at the acreage as they were still customers. Meter now outside, but always greeted with a wave and a smile! The coffee breaks now on occasion we’re in the CO-OP cafeteria,
but the company was the same!
To all the family, my sincere condolences, but I know you have a treasure chest of memories.
Stew

Collene Skoven and Family:

Going to miss your lovely smile. The kids will miss your candy dish, always full and they could have as much as they wanted.

Paul & Terry:

Janet and family. Thanks for sharing with us. We didn't know your mom but we are starting to know you and your family and we love you all. She raised some wonderful people. She seemed like quite a card from the stories we heard. I'm sure that you'll miss her but her voice will always be in your heads and her spirit will be in your hearts. She made you laugh right up to the very end when she decided to make 'fake' real. It's all the memories that help carry you through at the right moments. We appreciate you. Hugs to everyone. Lots of love, Terry and Paul.
