Cheryl (Sherry) Leavitt, née Carpenter, of Butte, AB passed away peacefully with her family by her side on May 25, 2019 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sherry was born in High Prairie, AB on August 4, 1948 to loving parents Lloyd and Val Carpenter. They eventually settled in Rocky Mountain House. Sherry leaves to mourn Mike Leavitt, her adoring husband of 48 years, and their four children Ryan (Tammy), Kyle, Amanda (Kevin), and Meghan (Dave). Grandma Sherry will be missed by her six treasured grandchildren: Kayla, Hailey, Jayda, Ryker, Penny, and Clara. Her aunts Joan (Jerry) Hinse of Slave Lake, Evelyn Lewchuk of Spirit River, Rena Leavitt of Lacombe, and Caroline Maxson of Armstrong, BC, as well as many cousins and friends, will fondly remember Sherry’s kind, gentle, and generous spirit.

Sherry married Mike on July 18, 1970. After ten years of life in Calgary, they moved back to Butte and spent 41 years together on their farm. She loved her family above all else and was very proud of her children. She was happiest with family and friends gathered around her ever-expanding table for holidays and celebrations. Sherry enjoyed baking with her grandchildren, watching their activities, reading with them, and spoiling them. She was a surrogate mother for many children, and if someone didn’t have a place to be for the holidays, they were welcome in her home. Sherry liked to quilt, sew, shop, and watch hockey. She enjoyed spending her summers in her gardens and winters in Yuma, Arizona with Mike where she made many good friends.

In anything she did, Sherry put her family first. Always a happy person, she could see the best in almost any situation. Throughout her battle with cancer, she did not complain once and only worried about how her family was doing.

Sherry loved children and had a passion for teaching that led to working at Rocky Elementary, Glenbrook Elementary in Calgary, and finally Caroline School. She poured her heart into her work for thirty years and she had an immeasurable impact on children throughout her career.

A celebration of Sherry’s life will be held on August 4, 2019 at the Leavitt family farm. Further details will be available closer to the date. Cremation entrusted to Rocky Mountain Crematorium, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.
