Obituary

Kohtala, Viljo
1922-2022

The family of Viljo Kohtala announcing his passing on May 22, 2022 at the age of 100 years at the Good Samaritan Clearwater Centre.
Viljo Eugen was born in the Binlgey District, Alberta on January 19, 1922 to parents Hilda and John (Nick). Sadly his parents had lost their first son Ahti Verner in August of 1920, so Viljo was their only child. Viljo began farming & ranching after finishing grade 10 in 1937.
He became a member in the Oras Community Club in the 1940, and later in the Taimi and Bingley Districts. He became actively involved on the Bingley Ball Team in the Lochearn Fast Ball League in 1947. Viljo also joined the Co operative Association, elected to the board serving as secretary from 1949-1953, then Chairman from 1957-1963, and back to secretary from 1968-1981. He served on the Credit Union board, Farmers Union (known as Unifarm), and on the Rural Electrification Association (REA board), the Library and School Board and helped people with their accounting. Always giving to his community.
In 1965, Viljo found love, from a beautiful woman Anja and her 3 daughters: Christel, Annika and Linda. Viljo and Anja were married June 11, 1965 in Red Deer, then they all resided on the family farm in the Bingley District. Their family was completed in 1968, by the birth of their baby girl Cindy.

Life on the farm was always busy, between farming, Viljo’s community commitments, Anja driving bus and the girls activities. When they could get away, trips to BC for fruit picking was a favorite, or times spent our west admiring the beautiful spots.

Viljo is survived by his daughters: Christel (Dale) Williams and three children of Rocky Mountain House; Annika Schultz (predeceased by one son) of Sylvan Lake; Linda Kohtala and two sons of Rocky Mountain House; Cindy Kohtala of Helsinki, Finland; 5 Grandchildren and 12 Great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by Anja on January 10, 2022, and he has missed her daily.
