Obituary

Shirley Ruth Grzech graced this world with her presence from May 4, 1941, until her peaceful passing on Sunday, May 26, 2024. Though our hearts are heavy with the loss, we find comfort in the beautiful legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of strength, determination to get ahead, and independent spirit.

Born in 1941 during the tumultuous days of World War II to parents, Charlie, affectionately known as "Chips," and Violet Parsons, Shirley's early life on the Alberta Prairies alongside brothers Ray and David was marked by both challenges and hardship. Growing up in those rugged surroundings times were tough and, she developed a strength and determination that would define her throughout her life. Shirley's story is one of perseverance, hard work, and a DO-it YOURSELF attitude, which she carried with her in every endeavor.

After her schooling in the late 1950’s, Shirley worked as a cashier at Deluxe Foods in Rocky Mountain House. It was here, amid the everyday hustle and bustle, that she met the love of her life, Edward Grzech. Ed, with his playful charm, would often visit the store, teasing Shirley and stealing penny candies to catch her attention. This playful courtship blossomed into a deep and abiding love, and in 1961, Shirley and Ed were married, beginning a partnership that would span more than five decades until Ed's passing in 2014.

Together, Shirley and Ed built a life filled with love and laughter, raising three wonderful sons: Edward (Tatiana), Dwayne (Nancy), and Kerry (Patti). Shirley was the heart of their family, and kept the household and books organized while Ed handled the outside work. Her legacy of love extended to her seven grandsons—Kris, Jay, Lonnie, Brendan, Kyle, Sam, and Declan.

Throughout their lives, Shirley and Ed worked tirelessly to build a better future for their family. Their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit led them to own several businesses, including the founding of the Saddle Sore Saloon in Rocky Mountain House. They also operated a range of trucking companies, such as Walking Eagle Trucking, and managed gravel trucks, gravel crushers, and water trucks. Shirley was a rugged woman, often found behind the wheel of these heavy machines, proving that there was no task too tough for her.

One of their notable ventures was the founding of All Clean Steam and Wash, an oilfield company that became a family legacy. Shirley continued to dispatch and manage the phones for All Clean, supporting the business for several years before it was passed on to their son Kerry, and later to their grandson Lonnie. Shirley's dedication to her family’s businesses showcased her unyielding work ethic and determination.

In her 50s, Shirley and Ed founded the Saddle Sore Saloon, a venture that would become a legendary watering hole in Rocky Mountain House. Known for its rough-and-tumble atmosphere, the Saloon catered to the town's toughest inhabitants. It was a quintessential country and western drinking establishment that hosted Country Bands, Exotic Dancers and Strippers. For about 15 years, Shirley and Ed poured their hearts into running the Saloon, facing the many challenges that came with managing such a lively and demanding business. Although the experience was rewarding and left an indelible mark on the culture of the community, it was undeniably tough on them, and the relief they felt upon selling it was well-deserved after years of hard work and dedication.

Shirley had a passion for country music, and it was not uncommon to hear classic country tunes blasting from her car, living room, or the country and western saloon she owned. Her love for music brought joy and energy to every space she occupied. Shirley’s life was one of relentless activity; she was always busy and rarely sat still. She was easy to talk to and had a natural ability to connect with people, making her a truly cool and remarkable lady.

Although Shirley’s passing brings sadness, her life should be celebrated for her many accomplishments, her unwavering determination, and the hard work she demonstrated throughout her life. Her legacy is one of resilience, love, and a spirit that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
