Obituary

McKinnon, Colin John

It is with very heavy and sad hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Colin John McKinnon on January 5, 2015 in his home in Rocky Mountain House.

Colin was born on May 1, 1956 in Calgary, Alberta to Neil and Christine McKinnon. The family resided in Calgary until 1957 at which time they moved to Innisfail, then Olds and later to Sundre in the early 1960’s. Colin went to school in Sundre and called Sundre home for many years. While in Sundre Colin worked for various oilfield companies, and enjoyed some of his spare time playing slow pitch for the Renegades, and was involved with the Elks Club. Colin spent most of his working life in the oilfield industry as an equipment operator and in 1995 Colin moved to Rocky Mountain House, working for Speight Construction for seven years. November 2002 Colin started work with Pidherney’s where he worked until his passing.

Colin enjoyed visiting and sharing stories and laughs with his family and friends. For all who knew Colin, even if just for a moment, he will be forever remembered as a gentle and generous soul who loved his family with his whole heart. Papa was very proud to tell everyone he had 15 grandchildren and the 16th on the way. Colin always had stories about his grandkids and he loved spending every minute of his spare time with them, as the kids loved every minute with Papa. He will be forever missed by all.

Colin is lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife Inger; sons Fred and Kevin (Erica) McKinnon; daughter Alysha McKinnon; step-sons Andre Mark, Tobias (Corrinna) Rapley, step-daughters Cora (Denny) Steel and Rita (Donald) McDonald as well his 9 grandsons and 6 grand daughters and one on the way. He also leaves to mourn his brothers Ken, Keith (Kathleen), Roy, Tony and sister Arlene (Mike), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Colin was predeceased by his father in 1976, his mother in 2013, brothers Barry in 1970, Glen in 1973, Bruce in 1984, and his mother-in-law Rita Janet Mark in 2013.

Funeral services will be held at the Covenant Christian Reformed Church on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Nic Wolmarans officiating. Interment will follow in the Sundre Cemetery on Sunday, January 11, 2014 at 2:00 P.M.

As an expression of sympathy, the family kindly requests memorial tributes be made to a trust fund set up to help cover funeral expenses, and can be made to the following: Rocky Scotia Bank, In Trust of Colin McKinnon, Account #: 105790528080 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
