Obituary

Teake Zwaagstra
August 31, 1980 – February 18, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband and father, Teake Zwaagstra of Cochrane, Alberta at the age of 39 years old. Teake left us far too early but his legacy of love and compassion will forever live on in our hearts.
Teake was born in Nakuru, Kenya on August 31, 1980 to Lammert and Sue Zwaagstra. Teake’s childhood was spent in Kenya with his family where he attended primary school at Pembroke House School in Gilgil, Kenya until the age of 13 years old, where he then attended secondary school at Blundell’s School in Tiverton, UK while Kenya remained his home. Teake would later spend his post secondary years in the UK enrolled in Environmental Science at the University of Nottingham. It was during his Gap Year from University where he would travel to Sabah, Malaysia and volunteer at an orchid sanctuary in the Borneo and meet his future wife, Candace. A couple of years later, the two were married and made a home in Canada where they welcomed three beautiful daughters into the world, Ani, Sofia and Maddi. The girls were Teake’s pride and joy and he was the most playful, silly, kind-hearted, gentle father a girl could ask for. For the past eight years Teake has been employed with TC Energy, a job for which he loved. In Teake’s spare time he enjoyed cycling, hiking, gardening and pretty much anything that got him into nature. Teake loved camping and the great outdoors and doing these things with his family gave him the greatest joy. He had a great love for animals and for his homeland of Kenya. He loved to sit around a campfire and tell us stories of his life in Kenya. He was always sharing stories with the girls of his adventures with his family there and we were always so captivated by how he swam in the same lake as crocodiles! Crimson Lake did not have those!! ...until of course Teake entered the water and suddenly showed the girls what a “Daddy crocodile” looked like! This was Teake, he was playful and so full of love. He will be so greatly missed by us all and everyone who knew him. He was a beautiful soul who was pure heart.
Teake is survived by his wife, Candace; their three daughters; Ani, Sofia and Maddi; his parents: Lammert and Sue Zwaagstra; his younger sister Tamara Mearing-Smith (Mark); his oldest brother Homme (Kate) Zwaagstra and their three young children, Lammert, Eila and Yves, all of the UK; and his younger brother Durk (Elvira) Zwaagstra, who reside in Spain with their young son, Adrián. Teake is also lovingly remembered and survived by his family on his paternal side, Liesbeth & Georg Schenk, their children Nynke (Clyde) and Sebastian and Anne-Sophie, Ilse (Casper) and Daniel and Yma and Redmer; Herman Zwaagstra & Japke Kiestra; and Sjoerd Zwaagstra all of the Netherlands.
Teake was predeceased by Maternal Grandfather, Herbert Kenneth Thomas; Maternal Grandmother and his beloved Nyanya, Kathleen Mary Thomas-Allen; Paternal Grandfather / Pake, Homme Zwaagstra; Maternal Grandmother/Beppe, Hendrikje Zwaagstra-Jager; Maternal Great Aunt, Ella Louise Bubb-Allen; and cousin Lindy Bubb.

A Celebration of Teake’s Life will be held at the Rocky Mountain House Funeral Home, on February 28, 2020 at 2:00 PM. Cremation entrusted to the Rocky Mountain Crematorium.

Memorial donations in Teake’s name may be made to the Daphne Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Rehabilitation Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. ( www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/donate/honour )

STEVEN MUTUNGI:
Teake it is hard to think that I will never get to see or hear from you again in this life time. You have left us with so many unforgettable memories since 1996 when i first met you in Blundells school. You had such a great personality and you filled my stay in Blundells with so much laughter, joy and memories that still linger till today.

We travelled to Kenya where our parents met. My family & friends immediately fell in love with your presence. Our trip to Mombasa was filled with adventure and happy memories never to be forgotten.

Another great memory was when I met Candace in London( your future wife) for the first time .It was an honour to have the introduction which resulted in an amazing long term friendship that lead to marriage and 3 beautiful children (Ani, Sofia, and Maddi). The endless meet ups, phone calls, emails and whatsapp chats over the years. You always stayed in touch and this shows how you valued your friends.

It saddens me knowing that over Christmas when we last spoke. You had promised to visit us in Kenya this year with the family & letting us host you.

Unfortunately this wasn’t meant to be. But deep down I know I will see you again in the next life Teake. Your memory is forever etched into the Mutungi family hearts. And we have an angel in heaven called Teake to watch over us. May you Rest well with the Angels & Saints

Mutungi family (Kenya).
Rebecca Hamilton :
Dear Candace and family,

I’m very saddened to hear about the passing of Teake. I haven’t seen him for over 20 years - since Blundell’s but I always remember Teake as fun, friendly and kind. It’s hard to believe that he’s no longer with us.

I’m holding you close in my thoughts and hoping you can find comfort in the many memories you had together.

Old Blundellian Club, Blundell's School, Tiverton, Devon, UK:
To Dear Candace and family

We are very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband Zwaagstra, and on behalf of the Old Blundellian Club and Blundell’s School, we would like to express our deepest condolences to you and your family.

We record the passing of Old Blundellians as a matter of course on a listing on the Old Blundellian Club website. This enables Old Blundellians who may have been peers and who they may no longer be in touch with be aware of an individual’s passing. On occasions families sometimes wish to add an obituary, should you or your family wish to include one, please let me have a paragraph or two when it is convenient.

Once again, we are so sorry to hear of your loss.

Best wishes

Robin Corden:
Teake left a strong impression on all the people that were lucky enough to attend school with him. An impression of a well brought up, well gounded, thoughtful, kind hearted, brave and funny young man. A young man deeply in touch with the natural world and its diverse wildlife. A true country gentleman. I will remember his smile and his laugh most of all. Blundell’s was a better place for his presence. Sending all our love to his family and friends. Xx
