Obituary

Prins, Norman

Norman (Nanne) Abraham Prins went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, September 17, 2020, surrounded by his loving family.

Norman was born June 23, 1929 in Andijk, The Netherlands, the thirteenth child of Jacob and Dina Prins. He grew up in Andijk and found the love of his life, Maaike Dykstra there. They were married on August 14, 1952 and were blessed with six children during the following years. In 1967 they made a life changing decision to emigrate to Lacombe, Alberta and even though moving a young family to a new country had its challenges, it was a decision that Norman and Mae never regretted.

Norman always worked hard to provide for his family and did a great variety of jobs. In the Netherlands he worked at tulip farming with his brothers and at road construction. In Canada, he worked with his brothers farming and feed truck driving. Norman and Mae purchased a greenhouse business in Bentley and in Rocky Mountain House. In 1978, they sold the business and he took on the position of maintenance man at Westview Lodge until his retirement. He was always proud of the fact that he was never unemployed.

Norman was well known as a man with a big smile, big stories, and even bigger heart. This shone through in many ways, one of which was the many volunteer projects that he and Mae worked on through Disaster Relief Services, the Orphanage in Mexico, and the Lord’s Food Bank.

Norman enjoyed his retirement years. He finally had extra time to develop and expand his many hobbies. He loved gardening, painting, crafting, carving, building, etc. Many of Norman’s family and friends have been blessed with the results of these creative talents in the form of paintings, canes, wooden toys, ships in bottles, painted rocks, etc. He was always excited to show anyone what he was working on and loved to try and teach his grandchildren some of these skills.

The last few years were difficult for Norman. His mind was still sharp, but he was unable to communicate easily and found it difficult to walk on his own. The move to the Clearwater Centre was very timely. Their ground floor suite enabled us to keep visiting especially during these last few months. Window visits were unusual, but Norman and Mae adapted. We were all delighted to visit outdoors again and take Dad and Mom to be with their family. We are very thankful for the kind and loving care displayed by the staff- thanks for hugging them when we could not.

Norman is survived by his loving wife Maaike (Mae) of 68 years; his family: daughter-in-law Marie Prins; daughters: Ann (Rein) Vande Glind, Josephine (Peter) Belder, Alice Tekelenburg, Margaret (John) VandenBrink, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by their infant daughter Dineke, son Jim, son-in-law Anthony Tekelenburg and granddaughter Juanita
