Obituary

Devlieger, Gary

1930 - 2021

Gerardus Martinus deVlieger, Gary Devlieger to all that knew him was born in the city of Zierikzee, Netherlands, November 30, 1930. The city boy grew to a young man nurtured on dreams of the farm life. These dreams found him aboard the Volendam in 1950 setting sail for his new adventurous life as a Canadian farmer.

Being determined, his first job was working on a farm in Balmoral, Manitoba. You could say reality hit the first winter when he experienced his first prairie winter and an unimaginable -40C. That was enough Manitoba for him. In 1951 he continued west. Still determined to be a farmer he took work on a farm in Blackfalds, Alberta.

One Sunday morning in 1954 a new young Dutch girl arrived in church. After a year of courtship, he married the love of his life, Margaret deNooy. The two of them worked hard and even at one time were able to brag about being the owner of electric lights and a plug in. He became the proud father of his first son, Richard, in 1959. With his wife and son in tow he headed west to Rocky Mountain House. There they bought their very own dream, a farm in the Frisco Hall area. His family grew with the birth of Paul in 1962 and Dale in 1964.

Between Farming and working at Coles auction mart the children grew and the dream continued. If that wasn’t work enough, he began night shifts at the local RCMP station where he met many colourful people, local and imported. After a few years of mastering cloning, he gave up the extra jobs and stuck to farming, his real life.

Being the shrewd man he was, he jokingly said he sold his farm twice before moving to town. Once when he retired from farming and kept a small acreage to enjoy the mountain view. A second time when he sold the acreage to move to town. Throughout his 91 years Gary lived the life he wanted, he had adventure, enduring love, satisfaction from the fruits of his labour and remained independent till the end.

Gary is survived by is devoted wife Margaret; his sons; Richard (his wife Maria and their children; Morgan, Adria {husband Darin}, Richard {wife Kelsey and daughters Lily and Autumn}): Paul (his wife Barbara and their children Brandon {wife Michelle}, Jason and Tasha): Dale (his wife Josephine and their sons Nathan {wife Nadine} and Anthony).

We will miss your easy nature and full laugh.

Rick Sims:

I was saddened to hear of this passing of Gary and Margaret. They were such a fun couple. Always laughing, smiling. Margaret was a very kind lady. Gary was willing to lend a helping hand when asked. Richard, Paul, Dale, my condolences to you and all of the family.

Tim & Lynn Petluk:

To all of the Devleiger families; We are so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Bill and Wilma Tensen:

Our Condolences with the loss of both Dad and Mom. The one blessing is that they went close together. It would have been so hard for one to be left behind. I've know your Mom and Dad since I was a child and I used to babysit you boys. Dale I even got to hold you as a baby in Church for your baptism, it was a special honor I will never forget. Have lots of neat memories for sure. I was Wilma Vander Leek. Would have been so nice to meet you guys, but with Covid that is not to be. May God Bless each of you and keep you in his care.

Audrey Gaetz:

So sorry for your loss of both your mom and dad, knew them for almost 60 years and had a good visit with them shortly before they passed , your dad always had a joke and smile. They were good neighbors. Thinking of all of you at this time, they were so proud of all you boys and families

Tracy & Leonard Goy:

Rhonda Hamilton McPhail:

Richard and all the Devlieger family.
Sad to hear of your father’s passing. He lived a good long life. Have thought of you, Richard, many times over the years. Seems we are all losing our parents. Hard time for all. I hope you have many happy memories of your family and time spent in Rocky. My sympathy to you all in the loss of your father.
