Devlieger, Margaret

Margert Devlieger was born Greta deNooy, March 10, 1931 in Bennekom, Gelderland, Netherlands. In an area ravaged by war young Greta experienced great loss and grief. During the heart-breaking years of her young life, she only wanted the love and comfort of a family of her own.

When Greta came of age, she ventured to Canada aboard the Groote-Beer to aid her sister who was going though trying times. Upon arrival she decided that a new life needed a new name. Greta became Margaret as she embraced the Canadian way of life.

Fresh from Holland, unable to speak English she found fellowship at the local church. This is where she was noticed by a young man ready to settle down. Her love story begins. Together they would picnic, go to the drive-in theater and hang out by the granary chewing gum; it certainly was a simpler time. One year later Margaret married Gary Devlieger.

She had so much love to give and he was more than willing to share is love, dreams and life with her. When Richard was born in 1959, she was overjoyed at finally having a little family of her own. In 1960 they moved to a farmstead in Rocky Mountain House. More space meant more room for children. Paul joined the family in 1962 then Dale in 1964.

Margaret having spent 10 years in an orphanage shared an affinity with youth from troubled circumstances. Gary and Margaret became foster parents in 1961. For more that 25 years they opened their homes and hearts to 69 children. Margaret was a loving and devoted mother, wife, sister and friend; we will miss you so.

Margaret is survived by her sons; Richard (his wife Maria and their children; Morgan, Adria {husband Darin}, Richard {wife Kelsey and daughters Lily and Autumn}): Paul (his wife Barbara and their children Brandon {wife Michelle}, Jason and Tasha): Dale (his wife Josephine and their sons Nathan {wife Nadine} and Anthony).

She is predeceased by her husband Gary.

Due to COVID restrictions no service will be held but a private Inurnment where she will be laid to rest with her loving husband Gary will be held at a later date.

Herb & Winnifred Risto:

A dear sister has gone on to glory.
We had many good talks. She had a good love for the Lord.
We visited and had tea together. We enjoyed pancakes together not so long before they became unwell.
We rejoiced together regarding their upcoming plans to be closer to family.
There is no doubt that we will and do miss them. We leave them in the care of our Lord.
We send our sympathies to you, as family, and to their greater family, all those that they fostered.
May the Lord bless and comfort all of you!!

Hank and Dawn Smid (neeSims):

I (Dawn) have good memories of your parents. You may not remember, but I used to babysit you boys so your mom and dad could have a night out. Every time I talked with your parents, they would brag about you boys. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families during this time. I cannot imagine what it’s like to loose both mom and dad in such a short time. May God’s peace be with you

Rick Sims:

This photograph shows the true “inner” Margaret. Full of grace, beauty and peace.

I was saddened to hear of this passing of Gary and Margaret. They were such a fun couple. Always laughing, smiling. Margaret was a very kind lady. Gary was willing to lend a helping hand when asked. Richard, Paul, Dale, my condolences to you and all of the family.

Tim & Lynn Petluk:

Sending our sincere condolences to the Devlieger families especially to our brother in law Paul & sister Barb.
Your mom was a beautiful lady with a heart of gold. We are very sorry for your loss.

Rhonda Hamilton McPhail:

To the Devlieger families: I am heartbroken for you all. It’s so hard to lose a parent but losing both - I cannot fathom. They were both good people, always smiling. Hugs to you all.

Wilma Tensen nee Vander Leek :

Our Condolences with Mom's passing. I have some fond memories of playing with your cousins Ada and Carla in an old grainary. Your mom had The Best dress up clothes and shoes for us to play with! Have great memories of that for sure. She was a fun lady for sure!
