Leavitt, Shirley Anne

Leavitt, Shirley Anne

Shirley Anne Fisher was born in the Rocky Mountain House hospital on Sep 22, 1939 to Art and Alice Fisher.

She spent her youth on their farm west of Rocky and, in the winter, at lumber camps in the Jackfish and Ram areas where her father worked on the crew and her mother cooked. The family moved into town when Shirley was in high school. There she worked part time in Caine’s Jewelry shop. She graduated high school and paid her way through nursing school in Red Deer. She returned to Rocky and worked in the Rocky hospital for 40 years.

In 1960 she married Gordon Leavitt. They had 3 children - Kelly, Todd, and Melinda. The family moved to a farm along the North Saskatchewan river in 1973 where they raised cattle. Summers were spent at the cabin at Crimson Lake with family and friends. She was a member of Eastern Star and the Pine Hills Ladies Golf Club. Gordon passed away in a truck accident in 1984 leaving Shirley to raise the kids and manage the farm.

Shirley met a new partner - Don Curr in 1988 - they golfed and traveled with family and friends. In the summer they lived in Everdell and in the fall they drove their motor home to Arizona. There they spent time with the Yuma bunch which included many friends from Rocky. She looked forward to camping with the Yuma bunch in Tees each summer and fishing at Slave Lake each spring.

She was looking forward to celebrating her 80th birthday in the 22nd. Unfortunately her heart decided otherwise.

She leaves behind her children: Kelly and Jo-Ann, Todd and Camille, and Melinda; their children: Todd Jr. and Regan and Jayden; her partner Don and his family: Trevor Tami and Terri and their families; her brother Jim and Linda; many nieces and nephews and countless friends in Rocky and throughout Canada and the US.

She chose to be happy despite what life handed to her. Her smile and giggle will be missed.

A celebration of Shirley’s life was held at the Lou Soppit Community Centre on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 2:00 PM.

Memorial donations in Shirley’s name may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Rocky Mountain House Compassionate Care Hospice Society.

Dear Don, and all of Shirley’s family,
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Shirley’s passing, and extend our sincerest sympathies at this most difficult time. We cannot believe another of the “‘39 Club” will no longer be with us. We have so enjoyed the fun times in Yuma, golfing, reunions at Tees, etc. We have not known you and Shirley for a lot of years, but those we had with Shirley are treasured. She will most definitely be missed. You chose such an appropriate photo for this posting as it is just how we will remember her, with that big smile and the sparkle in her eyes. We are unable to attend the service as we are taking my Mom home to Saskatchewan, and to a 93rd birthday. We are sure it will be a loving tribute to a great lady. We look forward to seeing you soon, Don, and will surely have a hug for you then. May knowing that others care help to give you strength at this most difficult time.
