Mervin Lorne Rockel

After a long illness Merv Rockel passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Clearwater Wellness Centre on Dec 31, 2022.

Mervin was born to Frances and Otto Rockel at home on the farm near Lanigan, Saskatchewan on January 14, 1940.

He is survived by his devoted wife Shirley, daughters Wendy (Mark) and Kathy, granddaughters Clara (Conrad), Hannah, Taylor (Ashton), brothers Ken (Isabel), Lyle and Harvey, sister-in-law Beverley (Bob) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Merv served in the community as a school administrator in Rocky Mountain School Division #15 for 35 years as Principal at Leslieville school, Vice-Principal at Rocky Jr-Sr high school, and Principal of Pioneer school. He looked for ways to advance the needs of those he taught and worked with by working on ATA pension, finance, and curriculum committees, as well as the Rocky Cope board and Central Alberta Persons with Developmental Disabilities board as a member and vice-chair. Merv’s goal as a teacher was that school should be a welcoming place that would allow every child the opportunity to achieve.

Farming was Merv’s first love and after moving to an acreage he started off slowly to farm gradually adding more land and cattle. As a result of farming, he became interested in rural electrification serving on the Horseguard and Rocky REA boards, as President of the Alberta Federation of REA’s and was a member of the Alberta Utilities Consumer board.

Our family will celebrate Merv’s life with a graveside Inurnment service in the spring at Horseguard Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rocky Compassionate Care Society or to a charity of donor’s choice.
