Obituary

Roy William Wirtanen
August 23, 1943 - May 13, 2022
With great sadness, Roy William Wirtanen’s family shares the news that he passed away suddenly in the early hours of Friday, May 13th, 2022 in Rocky at the age of 78.
Roy spent nearly his entire life in the Rocky and the West Country. He was known, respected and loved as a patient, helpful, and inventive father, teacher, builder, adventurer and friend.
Roy was born on the Mikkila homestead northeast of Rocky between Oras and Bingley in 1943 and was raised there with his sister Florence (Fredine) by their Finnish parents. Their mother, Aili (nee Mikkila) was a constant presence on the farm through many difficult years. Their father Matt Wirtanen, and uncle, Tauno Mikkila, supplemented the family’s income with work in bush camps and construction.
Surrounded by a largely Finnish community, Roy began his elementary school in 1950 not speaking any English. In 1962, he was part of the last graduating class from the Rocky Mountain House High School. He took a job at Deerhome in Red Deer, working on and off there while he completed his teaching certificate at the University of Alberta. At Deerhome he also met Joy Zabok. They were married in 1967 and had their first son, Kevin, in August 1969 just days before starting his first teaching posting at David Thompson High School. Their second son, Kent, was born in 1972, about the time Roy transferred to Rocky where he passionately continued to learn, practice and teach “shop” to hundreds of Rocky’s students at Will Sinclair High School until 1998.
The family home in the Brouwer subdivision was one of many he designed, built, or helped build, including their retirement home in Nordegg.
Roy’s love of the outdoors, exploration and travel carried through his career and his retirement with many hundreds of miles hiked with friends and family throughout western Canada and many thousands more rolled and camped across North America. His easy smile, (near) endless patience and willingness to help solve any problem were among his many qualities that endeared him to his friends and neighbors.
Roy’s absence is poignantly remembered by Joy, Kevin (Lara) and Kent (Tracy); his grandchildren Anika, Ian, Hannah and Carmen; and his sister Florence (Ernie) and children (Eric and Mark); and extended family and friends.
The family extends its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the medical teams of Rocky Ambulance, Rocky Hospital, and Stars Air Ambulance.
A celebration of Roy’s life will be held at the Rocky Funeral Home [4808 48 street, Rocky Mountain House, AB] Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 1:00pm with a light luncheon to follow.
If you wish, in lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to Rocky Search and Rescue Society or to Stars Air Ambulance.
Cremation entrusted to the Rocky Mountain Crematorium, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.
