Konynenbelt, Jannetje “Jennie”

Jennie passed away peacefully at home on December 16, 2020.

Jennie was born in Nijverdal, The Netherlands, in 1935, the third child of Adriaan and Grietje

de Jonge. When she was five years old, WWII broke out. In the last years of the war, the family was separated; forced into hiding to avoid her dad having to work for the Nazis.

In 1951, they immigrated to Canada, first coming to the Arbutus area, then to Red Deer. A few years later they purchased their farm east of Red Deer.

Jennie had a variety of careers. She began them back in Holland, working as a nurse in a senior’s home for two years until she had to return for her brother’s wedding in 1955. She then nursed in Red Deer, Ponoka, Edmonton, and Sarnia, Ontario.

She later reconnected with Marinus (who was from her hometown) and they married in 1965, living in Rocky with Marinus’s older brother “Uncle Hans”. In 1972 they bought and renovated an old house, turning it into a downtown character home. When Jennie was outside tending to her flowers, people walking by would frequently tell her how lovely her home looked.

Marinus, Hans and Jennie ran the bottle depot out of their garage for a few years, and later Jennie opened her gezellig little store, The Rocky Dutch Import, out of the front of the house until the late 1980’s. During this time, she also worked as an ambulance attendant when needed.

Jennie was the ultimate caregiver; caring for her mom, her dad, Hans, and Marinus through their illnesses until their passing’s. After Marinus died in 2011, her own health declined, but she was able to remain in her home, being cared for by her daughter Marlene. She was homebound and deeply cherished the visits and support from friends and family.

Jennie will be cherished and remembered by her three daughters; Hetty-Ann (Rob) Stryker, Marlene, and Jody (Scott) Klooster, and her grandchildren; Marissa, Jared and Tori Stryker, and Sam, Caylie, and James Klooster, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the de Jonge, Abma, and Konynenbelt families here and in the Netherlands.

Jennie was predeceased by her parents, her husband Marinus, his brother Hans, Arie and Pearl de Jonge, Nancy and George Abma, all of Marinus siblings. What a joyful reunion they are having.

Due to Covid19 restrictions a celebration of Jennie’s life will be planned for a later date.

Elwin Mulder :

I have warm and fond memories of the Dutch store. From September 1988 until February 1989 I stayed in Caroline as an exchange student. For Christmas I bought typical Dutch food and sweets for my Canadian exchange familiy. It was a real treat to be there.
My condolences to the family and loved ones.

Greg and Heather Riviere:

Our thoughts and prayers to you all on the passing of Mom. She was such a wonderful and kind lady. I will miss my visits with Jennie on the back porch and the laughs we had and will always hold her love in my heart.

Dirma Roseboom :

I mostly remember your mom as the super kind lady from the best Dutch Store around. I didn’t actually realize she was a nurse too. Sorry to hear of her passing. May God be your strength and comfort.

Rocky & Nancy Konynenbelt:

Hetty-Ann, Marlene, and Jody: Our sympathy on the passing of your mom. May the Lord truly comfort you and your families during this time, and especially during this season.

Arie(Shorty)&Bev Korver (Lethbridge,Alberta):

Sorry to hear about your Moms passing . We will keep you all in our prayers during this difficult time. She was a wonderful lady. When I was younger, we would visit you Mom and dad and uncle Hans alot. Always had a good time. They would always stay at our farm(Wichers farm) but later on your Mom and Dad would stay at the Koestes but Uncle Hans would always stay at our home. Lots and lots of good memories. Cherish the memories. They will always help you get through your grieving days. Take care. Bev(Wichers) Korver

Karin Nijenhuis:

So many memories, her nice little store, always friendly little talks we had. Me as a very young newly immigrant, sure enjoyed the little touch of home. I also remember her as an ambulance attendant. Not an easy job. She worked hard most of her life. She was a very kind person. Her garden always stood out, especial when the Clematis was blooming. That plant must be at least 40 years old.
My condolences to her three daughters.

Tim and Carolyn Clow:

Hetty-Ann, Marlene, Jody and your families:
It is during times of great loss that we realise how limiting words can be and how special our friends truly are. We hope you hear the words we cannot speak, for words can do no justice to the heartache you and your families have suffered. We're praying that God will uphold you with His comforting and loving arms. We ask that you don't mourn your mom's passing alone but that you share her memories of her. HUGS!
