Obituary

Datema, Aili Margareta

1934 – 2020

Aili Margareta Datema passed away peacefully July 17, 2020 at the Compassionate Care Hospice Suite, Clearwater Centre, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

Born in Condor, Alberta to Alma and Waino Syren on January 16, 1934, she was the youngest of eight children. She attended Northup School, helped on the family farm and enjoyed life growing up with her siblings, even in hard times. She had an ear for music, sang and taught herself to play the guitar, piano and organ. In her teen years, she even wrote and recorded songs on record. A musical talent that she shared and passed on to us kids. Many an evening was spent with Mom, Dad and us four kids singing songs and making music.

As a young woman, she worked in Rocky as a store clerk and a cook’s helper in a logging camp where she met the young man who would become her soulmate for more than 65 years.

Aili married George Datema on April 10, 1955. They started with farming and raising a family in the Blackfalds, Condor, and Arbutus areas, then moved to an acreage in the Ferrier district when George began working as an automotive mechanic. They moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia in 1974 where they lived until 1999 then moved back to Condor, retiring and living on the homestead where Aili was born. Due to failing health they moved to the Westview Lodge in Rocky in December of 2019.

Mom was always meticulous in in her homemaking skills. Like her mother, she baked homemade bread and generously gave many loaves away to be enjoyed by others. She liked things to be neat and tidy and got annoyed if those standards were ignored. For many years, she kept a daily diary and looked after her and Dad’s affairs. She enjoyed gardening and was especially fond of pansies.

If one word could be used to describe mom, it would be ‘devotion’. Devotion to her faith, her husband and her family.

Even as she became more frail, she still put others ahead of herself. Her fervent prayer was to maintain her dignity and intellect to the end. Well Mom, rest assured that your prayer was answered, and then some.

Even though we know she has gone and is singing with Angels, she will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by husband George; children Ivar (Connie), Darcy (Tracy), Marleen (Klaes); eight grandchildren; ten and a half great-grandchildren, and many extended family members too numerous to mention.

Aili was predeceased by parents Alma and Waino, brothers Walter and Ivar, sisters Annie, Agnes, Jenny, Olga and Hilja, and daughter Bikkie.

A Graveside Service was held on July 22, 2020 at the Hespero Cemetery, Hespero, Alberta. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in Aili’s name may do so to the Compassionate Care Hospice Society, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.
