Obituary

Vanderaa, Bernice Mary

1938-2020

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Bernice Mary Vanderaa on November 18, 2020 at the age of 82 years.

Bernice was born to her parents, Albert and Ann Adrian, on February 06, 1938. Her parents and older brother, Elmer, resided across from Hardindell hall where she attended school. While attending school, it was her job to haul water and get the fire going for her and the other kids attending classes. After finishing school, Bernice began working at a local grocery store, then worked at the CIBC bank. Bernice’s dad, Albert, owned a logging company, and because Bernice was such a good cook, she became the camp cook. While there, she met the love of her life, Leo, who was also working for her dad. Bernice and Leo were married in August of 1958, the same year that she lost her mother. Bernice and Leo began their life just across the road east of Hardindell hall. Their only child, Larry, was born on Remembrance Day in 1961. Bernice stayed home with Larry until he attended school. Then Bernice and Leo began working for GM Carson Construction, where Bernice was the secretary. In 1976, Leo and his brother, Ben, bought GM Carson Construction and Bernice continued on as their bookkeeper. Bernice and Leo built their new home in 1977, still remaining close to where Bernice grew up and attended school. Bernice and Leo worked hard during these years but managed to travel most of the world together before and after retiring in 1998. As Bernice’s health issues were mounting, she suddenly lost Leo on January 20, 2014. Despite her great loss and deteriorating health, pain, and disability, she persevered to continue to live as independently as possible with the help of her caregiver, Mariecil “Mary” Merin, devotedly by her side for 6 years. For this, Mary, we are forever grateful. Bernice was a quiet spoken person, she was hardworking, generous, smart, loving and had a witty sense of humor. She loved to cook, gardening, crocheting, music, dancing, and camping. She will be missed terribly by her family and friends.

Bernice is survived by her son Larry (Colleen), and her only grandson Jamie. Also, by her sister-in-law Gloria, her nieces and their families, Peggy(George), Colleen(Barry), Patsy, Evelyn(Miles), her nephews and their families, Keith(Sandy) Adrian, Keith(Shirley) Hope, and other numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her adopted family, Lorne and Marlene Lewis.

Bernice is predeceased by her parents, Albert and Anne, her husband Leo, her brother Elmer, her Aunt Betty Hope, her nephew Brian Reid, and others.

A graveside service won’t be held until August 23, 2021 where Bernice and Leo, together, will find their final resting place, on what would have been their 63rd Anniversary, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Rocky Mountain House.

Memorial donations, in Bernice’s honor, may be made to the Parkinson’s Association of Alberta.

Condolences

Shirley Szoke :

Condolences Larry, Colleen and Jamie on the loss of your mother and grandma. Have fond memories of camping on Father’s Day weekend with Leo and Bernice. Our Sunday dessert was always Bernice’s angel food cake made from scratch topped with Jim Rollier‘s homemade ice cream. She was a good friend and will be missed. RIP my friend
