Obituary

In Loving Memory of Wayne Mark Opdendries

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wayne Mark Opdendries, who passed away on August 11, 2026, in Red Deer, Alberta at the age of 57.

Wayne was born on August 16, 1968, in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Wayne will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lyndsey Opdendries; his children, Jonathon Opdendries and Connaire Opdendries (Tessa); and his grandchildren, Jaiden Opdendries (Phil), Landen Opdendries and Bauer Opdendries; and great grandchildren Hayes and Claire.

He will also be missed by his siblings, Swannie Datema (Gerald), John Opdendries (Judy), Henry Opdendries, Carl Opdendries (Jane), and Irene Manning (Mike), as well as his sister-in-law Joanne Opdendries, and many extended family members and friends.

Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Hank and Johanna Opdendries, and his brother Dick Opdendries and sister-in-law Cheryl Opdendries.

Wayne was a hardworking man who took pride in his career and the work he did. He began his working life as a Red Seal autobody technician before getting his Class 1 drivers’ licence and embarking on a career that took him down many different roads. From hauling gravel and asphalt to recycled tires and wood shavings, and he spent time hauling logs throughout the West Country and eventually became a picker truck operator working in the oilfield. On the highway or off highway Wayne saw all sorts of scenery.

Outside of work, Wayne found his greatest enjoyment in the simple things. He loved getting out on the backroads with his beloved dog George, who was never far from his side. He treasured camping trips with his family, barbecuing, spending time with the people he loved, and visiting with his close friends. Wayne also loved talking on the phone and could always make time for a good conversation.

Above all, Wayne was a family man. His family, friends, and George were at the heart of his life. He will be remembered for the time he gave so freely, the conversations they shared, the adventures along the backroads, the camping trips, the barbecues, and the many memories made together.

And most of all, George—the loyal companion who was by Wayne’s side through so many of life’s adventures, and his cats (nap buddies) U-joint and Winnie. They will miss him dearly.
Wayne leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a piece of himself in everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and never forgotten.

As per Wayne's wishes there will not be a service, but there will be a celebration of life at a later date.
