It is with profound sadness that the family of Stephen Makita Austin, at the age of 54 years, announce his unexpected passing at his home in Rocky Mountain House, AB on February 14, 2026.
Stephen was born in Baie Verte, Newfoundland to Shirley and Bond Austin of Middle Arm. He was a devoted husband to Zelda, his wife of 36 years, and a loving father to his children Samantha (Kelty), Makita (Dez), Devon (Carlee), and Evan. His greatest pleasure in life was spending time with his grandchildren – Masie, Braylon, Claira, Kaysen, Olivia, Dominic, Damon, Lincoln, Elijah and Grayson.
Stephen was known for being an extremely hard worker. He loved his job and spent the last 21 years working at Eldorado Pressure Services, a business owned by Bill and Kathy Ramage. The Ramages weren’t just work colleagues, but devoted family friends who are by our side through these trying times. Stephen also enjoyed spending time at his newfound hobby, which was making knives. He also had a deep passion for NASCAR racing and his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. He loved camping and side by siding with friends and family. He was known for a sense of humour and goofiness that meant there was never a dull moment in his presence, but when it came to guiding his kids, he was a serious, loving father who was always available with advice and quiet strength.
He is predeceased by his sister Daphne and brother Wade. Left behind to mourn are his parents, his sister Trudy (Steve), brother-in-law Eric, his nieces Sasha (Christina), Daina (Cris), and nephews D.J. and Thomas, as well as great-nieces and nephews.
