Obituary

With deep love and admiration for a life well lived, the family of Aldia Cadrain announces her peaceful passing on December 14, 2025, at the age of 90.
Known affectionately as GG to her grandchildren and as Gramma Al in the community, Aldia lived a life rooted in faith, service, courage, and unwavering love. Her generosity and warmth touched thousands through her cooking, her hugs, her humor, and her steady presence.
Aldia was born on June 23, 1935, near Delmas Saskatchewan to Philias and Rosabelle Lessard. Four siblings passed away before her birth, a loss that shaped the tenderness and faith of her family. She grew up in North Battleford, Sask with four older sisters Dora, Delores, Anna Mae, and Eleanor, one younger sister Jeannette, and one younger brother Dennis. She is lovingly survived by her sister Eleanor of Winnipeg.
After her parents separated in 1943, her mother operated a busy boarding house where the older girls helped with cooking and the younger ones were kept busy with chores such as sweeping floors and making beds. It was during these years that Aldia developed a lifelong love of dance. Ballet, tap, and Highland lessons kept her busy and out from underfoot. At the Catholic school she attended a compassionate nun helped her overcome a childhood stutter which transformed her confidence.
At sixteen, believing she was called to serve God, Aldia joined the Sisters of Mission Service in Saskatoon. After a year and a half in the convent she returned home on a sabbatical, never expecting that life had another plan. It was then she met Joseph Cadrain, the handsome man who would become the love of her young life. Their courtship unfolded between the Nordegg logging camps and handwritten love letters carried across Alberta. They were married on October 31, 1953. She was eighteen and he was twenty-five.
They began their married life in the Nordegg logging camps where she often laughed about being teased for not knowing how to even boil water. It became one of her favorite stories to tell. She learned to cook from her mother-in-law Agnes, her husband and brother-in-law.
After several moves and the arrival of their first children, Aldia and Joe moved to Rocky Mountain House in 1956. Two years later in 1958 they purchased a farm five miles east of town where they raised their family and created a home filled with hard work, faith, and the joyful noise of children. With eleven children born between 1954 and 1967 Aldia often said, “My children and I grew up together.” Those years included an outhouse, a wood stove, endless flannel diapers, gardens, and newborns arriving one after another. It was a busy and formative time when she became both a mother and a teacher.
Aldia’s life of service was wide reaching. She catered her first wedding in 1972 and continued for more than thirty years. She also led the St. Matthew’s Junior Choir for thirteen years, teaching many children to sing with heart even though she never learned to read music.
In her forties, Aldia learned to ski which became the beginning of years of mountain adventures across Alberta, British Columbia, and Montana. She taught her children and many of her grandchildren to love the slopes as much as she did and always reminded them before every run to call in their angels. Family ski trips to Panorama became treasured memories.
After Joe’s passing in 1983, Aldia’s spirituality deepened. She blended her Catholic roots with teachings about prayer, energy, and angels, and lived by the belief that God always put her where He knew she needed to be so she could be of better service to herself and others.
It was during her years operating the concessions at the arena and curling club that many came to know and love her as Gramma Al. Her cinnamon buns became as famous as her warm personality. Her welcoming presence became part of Rocky’s community spirit.
Aldia believed deeply in serving where she stood. Her philosophy was simple. "If I can, I should". Her community involvement included the Catholic Women’s League, the Rocky Lions Club, the Rocky Mountain House Stampede Board, and many other volunteer roles.
In 2002, Aldia was honored for her outstanding volunteerism after leading an initiative that raised thirty thousand dollars to install handrails at the Stampede grounds which improved safety and accessibility for seniors, families, and visitors.
Aldia married Ernie Miller later in life although heartbreak followed when Ernie passed away only weeks into their marriage during a trip to Alaska. True to her nature she moved forward and took on one of her most remarkable adventures cooking for ranching crews on Umnak Island in the Aleutian chain.
She loved to travel and enjoyed special journeys with her children and grandchildren including two trips to Ireland and a cherished trip with five of her granddaughters.
In last chapters of her life Aldia continued to live life to the fullest. She completed her first skydive in 1999 at age sixty-four, walked on fire, rode hundreds of miles on the back of a motorcycle. She travelled to India in 2000 where she met a Calgary family who came to call her Grandma. These years also brought a final companionship; she married Willard Mitchell in 2009. She continued to travel well into her eighties spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren whenever she could. Dancing, clogging at family campouts, the legion on Saturday nights. One of her favorite music festivals was held at the David Thompson Resort and she attended every year up until 2025.
In her final weeks, she was lovingly cared for by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, even insisting that she could put her clogging shoes on and dance with her walker. What an amazing lady, she continued to inspire and share her wisdom right until the end. “Because I can” was her motto.
Her sayings remain stitched into the hearts of those she leaves behind:
“By the Grace of God go I”
With Infinite love and gratitude for your wisdom and love, from her children to her great-great-grandchildren, we say:
Thank you, Mom. Thank you, Grams. Thank you, Gramma Al. Thank you, GG. Your love shaped us. Your stories strengthened us. Your legacy will guide us forever.
The branches of this family tree continue to grow, each one carrying a piece of Aldia and Joe’s faith and love of family. This is their living legacy, a living tribute to the love she poured into the world.

Jerry Visser:

She made the best cinnamon buns. At our forestry camp. Every morning at coffee time. She had a happy attitude in the morning, every day. She will be missed.

Rick & Rhonda Reynaud:

Such a fitting tribute to a grand lady. One cannot recall a community event from the past without seeing Al's fabulous smile at the serving table. What great feasts she prepared, and those cinnamon buns....! She knew the whole community and always had time to engage in a bit of conversation. Our sincere condolences to all the Cadrain family and special friends.

Kathy Inglis:

Dear Anita and the whole Clan.
I got to know Aldia about the time Ernie was entering her life and she sang in the choir in Sylvan Lake. She was always a bright light of joy and optimism for all her met her. However, I trust her soul is singing with the angels she called on so often in her eternal home in Heaven.

A prayer of support for all of you and a prayer for her to be enjoying eternal rest.

Ethel Nicholls :

Condolences to all the family she was a remarkable women and helped so many have courage to do things in life most people wouldn’t even try and her cooking was remarkable and she lived life to the fullest and always helping others what a wonderful mother she was not only to her own but many others my prayers are with you all at this time

Lisa Wilson:

So sorry to hear of Al’s passing. She was a wonderful lady. My first job was working at the curling rink for her. Learned a lot from her. I will never forget the time I ran into the whole family in Puerto Vallarta airport years ago when they were there for a wedding (grandson I think) and realized we were both staying at the Royal Decameron and never even ran into each other in the whole week I was there… too funny. She will be sadly missed.

Jennifer LHeureux:

When I heard of Auntie AL’s passing, I was deeply saddened. It truly felt like the world lost one of its brightest lights. I imagine her now, up in heaven, reunited with so many people she has missed for a long time, surrounded by love, laughter, and familiar faces.

She will always be missed. When I think of Auntie AL, for some reason the first things that come to mind are “healthy coffee” and cinnamon buns. And don’t think I didn’t notice that I never saw that recipe—perhaps her way of making sure we could never quite recreate her magic. In so many ways, that feels fitting.

She is someone I have always admired and someone I aspire to be more like as I get older. I may be taller, but I will absolutely be adopting her wardrobe.

She leaves behind so much love, and she will continue to be held in love by all of us who were lucky enough to know her. You will always hold a special puzzle piece in my heart.

With love,
Jennifer

Peter Feldstein:

I had the pleasure of getting to know Grandma Al as a musician at the David Thompson East Coast Kitchen Party Music Festival and looked forward to seeing her every year. She was a ray of sunshine, a lovely example of living life to its fullest, and a staple of the festival. We will all miss her very much!

Sheila and Freddie Pelletier:

We are so sorry to hear of Grandma Al’s passing. What an inspiration she was to us and our family. We are musicians and got to know her by performing at several music festivals where we were always delighted to see her smile and watch her dance! We even were lucky enough to be gifted her famous cinnamon buns. She came on a music cruise that we performed on in 2020 and by the end of the cruise almost everyone knew her as Grandma Al and many evenings she’d be up enjoying the nightlife long after we’d go to bed! Truly an inspiration!
Our most sincere condolences to her family and to all who loved her. I know there are many.

Dale and Becky Soppit:

Our deepest condolences. She was such a kind and caring lady. Al was a second mom for some and a safe haven for many others. She was certainly a happy memory maker for all who knew her. May she rest in peace.

Belle Clark:

My mom, Maisie, was the first friend Auntie Al made when she moved to Rocky and they remained friends through out their lives even becoming godmother to me and my sisters. Auntie Al introduced mom to clogging and I know they are with the angels clogging, laughing and having a good chat over a cup of tea. The world is a little dimmer without the bright light of our dear Auntie Al and her light still shines in all who had the privilege to know her. We will miss her hugs, her smile and her kindness and she will always hold a special place in our hearts. My sisters and I send our deepest sympathies and hugs to everyone in the family and may you find peace during this difficult time.

Ed Coderre and Family:

Aldia’s heart was so big that everyone felt her love and care . She let people know they mattered and spoke with wisdom . She was always welcoming and warm . Her traits are reflected in her family that I was happy to meet in past years , especially Anita, who has her mom’s dance moves and welcoming spirit.

Aldia lit up the world around her in life and now shines brightly above. May she rest in peace knowing her love was felt by so many and she made a difference to all. ❤️

Manvi Dhoopar:

I am deeply sorry for our loss. Grandma was an extraordinary woman, and her presence in this world — and in my life — was truly a gift. To me, she was a godsend who taught me some of the most important lessons I will ever carry.

Above all, she showed me that life does not stop, even in the hardest moments. She believed that no matter how heavy things feel, there is always a chance to begin again — to shape life into what you want, how you want, and to remember that it is never too late. That wisdom gave me strength, perspective, and the courage to look toward the future with hope and purpose. Because of her, I began envisioning the life I want to live and taking steps toward it.

Grandma was a true humanitarian. She saw no race, no color, no religion — only people. Her motto was simply to love all and serve all, and she lived that truth every day. Her compassion, generosity, and unwavering belief in humanity will continue to ripple through everyone she touched.

Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit, lessons, and love live on. I will carry her wisdom with me always. Please know that my thoughts and heart are with the whole family during this time, and that her legacy will never be forgotten.

With deepest sympathy and love,
Manvi

Subhash Dhoopar :

I am the fortunate one who with my family( Sunita, Sunny and Manvi) was introduced by Divine grace to Aldia ( who later became our Grandma). I was the person who arranged the tour to India in November 2000. My mother had passed away in October 2000, so after meeting and spending few days with Aldia, I felt the motherly love she had and my kids started calling her Grandma. Since then we had always been in touch. She would drive to or through Calgary anytime she felt coming and there was a room for her in our home. We would visit her in Rockey Mountain House or she will come visit us in Calgary 3-4 times a year. We, our whole family ( myself included, Sunita,Sunny, Aunshu, our grandsons Raveesh and Devansh visited about 2/3 weeks ago and she was so lively, she danced with Raveesh. We are very happy that we were able to meet a wonderful person like her in our lives. We will always remember you Grandma and will miss you.
