Obituary

Kay Marilyn Gray (Martin)

Kay passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025 at the Rocky Mountain House Health Centre.

Kay was born November 21, 1949 in Rimbey, to parents Leah and John Martin, and was the youngest of 6 children, (Betty, Richard, Cassie, Norma and Harry). She grew up around Rimbey and Eckville.

Kay worked at the Ritz Café where she met Bill. She married the love of her life, William “Bill” Gray on December 5, 1970.
After they were married, they lived for a short time at Nordegg because that’s where Bill was working. They eventually settled near Ferrier where they lived near Bill’s parents and brother. Kevin joined their family in 1972 and Wendy followed in 1975.
Kay worked at the SAAN Store, janitorial at Will Sinclair High School, a Dollar Store and many years at JB Crafts and Hobbies where she collected many treasures from over the years!

Bill & Kay built a Camp Shelter on their property in the 1990’s. This Shelter saw many family gatherings, potlucks and weddings over the years. Kay was lovingly known as the Camp Attendant or Warden and would often ride her quad up to check on everyone camped there.
Bill passed away in August 2005 and Kay remained on the home property by herself for 20 more years. Bill’s passing left an enormous void in Kay’s heart and she missed him immensely; in spite of this she was very independent, mowing lawn, splitting firewood and shooting squirrels. She had amazing neighbors who checked in on her, plowed snow from her yard and cut trees down when needed.
Kay greatly enjoyed baking and crafts. She was very well known for her homemade pies, cabbage rolls and knitted slippers. She spent many hours on her scroll saw making Christmas ornaments, painting ceramics, making her famous carrot loaf and playing cards.
Most recently Kay was the happiest just being at home, making plastic canvas creations, crocheting tea towels, eating Caramilk ice cream bars and complaining lovingly about her cat Gomer.

She was a very special lady who always had a smile, something sassy to say and welcomed anyone in for a visit.

Kay will be greatly missed by her children, Kevin (Lori) Gray and Wendy (Tom) Bickford as well as her grandchildren Justin, Kacey, Riley, Kelsey and Emma, and numerous great grandchildren. And will also be dearly missed by the many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends from near and far.

For those who want to make a memorial contribution in Kay’s memory they may be made to the ROAR Society, Rocky Mountain House.

At Kay’s request, there will be no funeral. A Celebration of Life and burial to be held in the spring.
