Dwayne Rodney Hammell
July 21, 1951 - May 29, 2026
It is with the heaviest hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Dwayne Rodney Hammell.
Dwayne was born and raised in the Rocky Mountain House area before moving and finishing school in Moses Lake where he took great pride in wrestling and growing his social circle.
After graduation, Dwayne moved back to Alberta where he worked the family dairy farm in Olds, tending to and milking 150 head of dairy cows daily.
Dwayne was a “Jack-of-all-trades” and every job was an opportunity to learn and grow his skillsets that he would utilize later in life. These jobs varied all the way from helping to build the Rocky Medical Clinic, to bouncing at bars and much more in-between. As long as Dwayne was working, he was happy.
Though, once he stepped foot in the oil patch, he found his career passion and worked his way up from greenhorn rigging, all the way up to Field Supervisor for prestigious oil companies such as Gulf, Conoco, Conoco-Phillips and Cenovus, where he was working when he finally retired. …for three months.
After which, Dwayne happily settled into “retirement” by driving for Mountain Cabs, making new friends, reconnecting with old and always ensuring people got to work on time and home safely.
If you knew Dwayne, you knew that family and work were his greatest passions in life. Forever the epitome of The Ultimate Family Man, nothing topped being a husband and father… until he was also made a grandfather and great-grandfather. Anyone could attest to the twinkle he would get in his eyes if ever given the opportunity to discuss what his kids were up to currently and “the grandbabies” most recent achievements in school and their many extracurricular activities.
Dwayne is survived and will forever be missed by his loving wife of 25 years; Debbie. His children Shelly, Shane (Jeanette), Crystal (Geoff), Barry (Kaylee), Jerry (Kassidy) and Linde.
His beloved Grandchildren; Taylor, Kaira, Cheyenne, Savannah, Elian, Amelia, Braylynn, Bryar, Bruin, Brantly, Kamden, Miles and Jackson as well as his great-grandchildren.
Dwayne is also survived by his sisters and brother in British Columbia as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Dwayne was predeceased by his parents Muriel (Eric), Rodney (Kay). Siblings; June, Elmer and Colleen as well as his beloved BabyGirl Meghan and nephew Ryan.
Loving Dwayne always came with knowing that to love him was to share him because he was something different and special to each person who knew and cared for him and we take comfort in all the stories and outpouring from our community.
Dwayne was our beacon of hope, our safe-space and we are so happy to know he was that for anyone else that needed it too.
The family would like to extend special thanks and gratitude to all the first responders, emergency workers and all those who have assisted us during this most difficult time.
We would also like to extend our sincerest, heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the other lives lost and impacted by this unspeakable tragedy.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Dwayne’s honour to STARS Air Ambulance and Calgary’s Children’s Hospital.
We also ask that anyone willing; please consider donating blood, a cause that was very important to Dwayne.
Those beside us never go away, they walk beside us every day.
Love Never Dies.
