It is with broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of Lavern John Ahlstrom on April 12th, 2024, at the age of 87 years.
Lavern was born to Ida and Victor Ahlstrom on May 28th, 1936 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 1943, at the young age of 7, the family moved to Alberta and settled in the Arbutus area. Lavern was the second of five children, and from an early age showed an interest in farming and the outdoors. Lavern was always outside. The outdoors was his passion, which led to many hunting trips with his brothers, sons, nephews, and friends in the West Country. There were always more stories than trophies that came back with them from their adventures.
At age 17 he began farming on his own. In 1960 he met Coral Peterson. They married on June 17, 1961, and their own family farm began. They built their farm from the ground up, with Lavern purchasing a sawmill to help build their first house. Soon after they were blessed with three children Pauline, John, and Nelson.
Lavern was always involved in helping his community which led him into pursuing a political career. All he ever wanted to do was try and make things better. He joined the Social Credit Party in the 1970's and traveled around Alberta in his leadership role. He ran for MLA in six Provincial Elections until he ended his involvement.
Volunteering and serving his community were important to him. He was involved in various organizations and committees including the Ag Society, Stampede Board, the Arbutus Hall Board, Clearwater County Taxpayers Association, and the Leslieville Elks. Lavern rarely missed a meeting and went through many chairs with the Elks since he joined in 1972, including the Past Exalted Ruler and Past District Deputy.
Family was at the heart of everything for Lavern and he was so proud of them all. He is survived by Coral his wife of 62 years, daughter Pauline (Gordon) Leslie, sons John Ahlstrom and Nelson Ahlstrom, grandchildren Melinda (Brendon) Lightbown and Glenn Leslie, and great grandchildren Luke and Everly Lightbown who they affectionately called Grandpa Berns. He is also survived by his siblings Wayne (Joyce) Ahlstrom, Luella Kennedy, Raymond (Hazel) Ahlstrom, and Garth {Aline) Ahlstrom, as well as many nieces and nephews whom he was so fond of.
He was predeceased by his parents Victor and Ida Ahlstrom, father and mother in-law Norman and Edythe Peterson, brother's in-law Skip Peterson, David Peterson and Clayton Kennedy, his nephew Blake Kennedy and nieces Michelle Peterson and Crystal Kerik.
A Memorial Service for Lavern will be held at the Leslieville Community Center on Friday April 26th, 2024, at 2:00 pm with lunch to follow.
Memorial donations in Lavern's name may be made to Leslieville Elk's Lodge #351.
