Obituary for our beautiful mother – Carol Barbara Thorkelson
Date of Birth: November 24, 1945
Date of Passing: May 11, 2026
Carol Barbara Thorkelson
Carol was born in Gimli, MB to August (Gusti) and Thora.
Carol set the standard for being one of the most loving and selfless mothers.
Carol worked a handful of jobs; she chose to give back to her community by being a foster parent for much of her adult life. Carol and her loving husband, Hal, welcomed the children into our home with open arms. She enjoyed cooking and baking and loved watching her children (foster and biological) eat and enjoy her amazing food. Her Friday night pizza nights were legendary. The love, structure and support that Carol and Hal gave to their foster children explain why many of them continued to call them “Mom” and “Pops” well into their adult lives.
The biggest love in her life was her husband, Hal, and her family. She loved with no limits.
Carol was the matriarch of our family; she will be dearly missed. Carol is survived by her sister, Beverly (Barry); her son, Haldor Jr, her daughter, Vanessa (Blair), grandchildren, Ranen and Avalin; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews and many loving foster children.
A Celebration of Life for both Hal and Carol will be held at the Rideout Community Centre in Kenora, ON, on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 12:00 noon until 3 pm. Anyone who knew them is welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the David Suzuki Foundation.
