Jack (Tjerk) Hornstra went to meet his Saviour on November 20th, 2025.
Jack was born on April 9th, 1924, in Eagum, Fryslân, The Netherlands. Dad was the fifth of six children born to Hotze and Maaike Hornstra. Dad immigrated to Canada in 1948 to Pearson, Manitoba. A year later he moved to southern Alberta to begin work for Robert and Clara Thompson, a couple who would become like Dad’s “foster” parents. Meeting Ingrid Wadman soon after, a two year courtship ensued with a wedding on April 19th, 1952. After several moves around the province of Alberta, Jack and Ingrid settled in the community of Alhambra on a farm with Ingrid’s parents, both of her brothers and their families.
Jack and Ingrid were blessed with three children: Rosalie, Erika, and Robert. In 1972 Jack and Ingrid left the farm to begin a construction business of renovations and new builds. Jack worked for himself until age 80, at which time he and Ingrid moved to Rocky Mountain House to enjoy condo living until his passing on November 20th, 2025.
Jack enjoyed many things in life including hiking, wine making, travel, his motorhome, reading, playing crib, socializing, and connecting with family and friends. Jack served on many different community boards and volunteered with a number of community services. Jack made life better for many people and numerous medical staff saw him as a positive influence in the hospital atmosphere almost to the day he passed away. A hard working man, Jack lived life with integrity and honesty, based in a faith that came alive through actions and not just words.
Jack is survived by his wife Ingrid, three children Rosalie, and John Daisley, Erika Wymenga, Robert, and Rhonda Hornstra, eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces in Canada, The Netherlands and Australia.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers and sisters and their partners, his son-in-law Ron Wymenga and his grandson
Scott Hornstra, both of whom he dearly loved.
The celebration of Jack’s life will be held at the First Christian Reformed Church on Wednesday, November 26th, 2025 at 2:00 pm.

Stephen and Barbara Olson:
Dear Erika,
We send our sincerest condolences to you in the passing of your father. From what you’ve shared with us about him, he was a role model to your family and all who knew him as a man of integrity and love for his family. He seemed to be a gentle character with a great sense of humour. He had a life well lived and I know he will be missed greatly.
Big hugs,
Steve and Barb
John and Rose Salomons:
Our sincere sympathy to you- Ingrid, Rosalie, Erica, Robert
Jack built our first home on Highway 22 so we got to know him well. John also hiked with Jack and enjoyed his fellowship on these mountain trips.
Jack enjoyed a long and blessed life and we were privileged to know him.
Corey and Marie Cermak:
Condolences to the Hornstra families.
Tim and Carolyn Clow:
Our sincere condolences to all of you on the passing of your dad, husband, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather. He will always be remembered to our Scholing family as Uncle Jack. The one who built our house, had a 10-15 minute power snooze every day after lunch lying on the picnic bench; he ate burnt cookies and mushy bananas; he thought the term 'heifer dust' was funny; He will always be remembered as a hard-working, respectable man, and great father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Maybritt Geverink:
Erika, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. Thinking of you and praying for your family. May he now rest in peace in the arms of the Lord.
Ruth Salomons Krabbe:
Dear Ingrid and family, my sincere condolences to you with the passing of Jack from this life to his eternal home after a century on this earth.
May God surround you with His comfort and peace. May you cherish the memories.
Krista Nelson:
My thoughts and prayers are with Jack's family. I loved being around Jack and Ingrid when I worked at Park Avenue. With the many great visits, friday Ice Cream and Jack's 100th Birthday celebration. He was an amazing human and he will be greatly missed by all. ♥♥♥
