Obituary

Darlene Selma McIntosh
Oct 26, 1958 - Feb 22, 2023

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Darlene McIntosh on February 22, 2023, at the age of 64. She was born to Marguerite and Holmfrid Holmgren on October 26, 1958, in Eckville, Alberta. Darlene and her twin brother Daryl were the youngest of 7 children. She went to school in Condor, Alberta and graduated from David Thompson High School in 1976.

She met Don McIntosh in her teens, and they quickly fell in love. After a few years of being together, she married her sweetheart on October 30, 1976, in Eckville, Alberta where they lived at the time. Their first child, Melisa was born in May of 1978. A year later they moved to the family farm in Evergreen which is where Darlene lived until her passing. Their second child Kevin was born in February of 1981 which completed their family.

She dedicated her heart and soul to raising her children, which to her was one of her most significant accomplishments. She was a very patient and tender mother who took the time to listen and educate her children. She was a hands-on mom, baking birthday cakes, sewing clothing, attending, and helping at sporting events, and volunteering and advocating for her children in their schools. She was always her children’s number one cheerleader and biggest fan.

Darlene was also very involved in her community, sitting on the Evergreen Hall Board as treasurer for 30 years, as well as the Bingo treasurer for 35 years. You would find her at the Bingo Hall Wednesday nights surrounded by family and friends playing for the big jackpot every week. Once both kids were in school, Darlene joined a bowling league in Rocky Mountain House. She bowled every Wednesday morning with her team the Country Bumpkins. She worked at the Leslieville Old Time Grocery and post office from 1992-1998.

Darlene and Don started an oilfield maintenance company in 2005 called Dardon Oilfield Services Ltd. Much of Darlene’s time was spent managing the office of the company, doing the bookkeeping, payroll, and safety.

Family was a priority for Darlene. She loved to attend events and reunions with family to re-connect and share stories. Some of her favorite memories were catching up with her siblings at their annual campout in June. Darlene enjoyed spending time around a campfire. You would often find her telling stories, singing and dancing along to her favorite music, or cuddling her grandsons around that fire. Darlene was an avid reader, sometimes polishing off a book over a weekend. She enjoyed her quiet time in the bath with a good James Patterson novel. She also enjoyed her visits with her father-in-law or close friends over a cup of Earl gray tea at the kitchen table.

Traveling together was an interest that Darlene and Don shared as they rode around in their motorhome down to several states south of the border. They also enjoyed spending time at their favorite tropical locations with friends and family.

Darlene was there for the births of both of her grandsons. It would be an understatement to just say that she loved to spend time with them, it was definitely one of her most favorite things. Her patience, playfulness and nurturing nature made the bonds with her grandsons stronger than ever and helped mold them into who they are today. Just as she did with her children, Darlene consistently showed up for her grandson’s activities. Whether it was swimming, hockey or soccer games, or dirt bike races, she was there showing her support.

Darlene’s legacy is evident in the impact she has had on the lives of everyone who knew her.
Darlene was predeceased by her parents Marguerite and Holmfrid; her parents-in-law William and Ingrid.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Don, daughter Melisa and partner Renee, her son Kevin and partner Natasha; and 2 grandchildren Titan and Liam. She will be lovingly remembered by her 6 siblings Don, Sharron, Rosemarie, Terry, Barry and Daryl and their families; as well as 3 brothers-in-law Ron, Tom and Tony and 2 sisters-in-law Candace and Marilyn and their families.

A Celebration of Life for Darlene will be held at the Evergreen Community Hall on Monday, March 6 at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Darlene’s name may be made to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre.
