In Loving Memory of Gail Lyn “Bookie” Sands
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gail Lyn “Bookie” Sands on October 22, 2026, at the age of 56 years, as she entered into her Lord’s arms.
Gail was born to John Pittendreigh and Ruth Knight in Innisfail, Alberta, on December 19, 1969. She attended school in Caroline through Grade 7 before continuing her education at Pioneer School in Rocky Mountain House.
Gail first married Richard Sorensen, and together they welcomed four children: Ronald, Rachelle, Candice, and Cassandra. Following their divorce, Gail married Cody Sands, the love of her life, in February 1997. Through their marriage, three more children joined their family: Twila, Amber, and Zachary, making Gail a proud mother of seven.
Gail loved all her children and her 21 grandchildren dearly. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she took immense joy in their lives, laughter, and milestones. She was also an avid animal lover, with a special place in her heart for her beloved dog, Jacko, and her cats.
Gail enjoyed crocheting and was known for her unforgettable sense of humour. Those who knew her will remember how she could be found making fun of her husband on a daily basis, always keeping him on his toes. Her quick wit, playful teasing, and ability to bring laughter into everyday moments were a special part of who she was.
In the later years of her life, Gail worked in the pipeline industry, where she formed deep bonds with her crew. She adopted them as family, welcoming everyone with open arms and celebrating their milestones alongside them. Gail had a beautiful way of making people feel included, valued, and loved. Whether connected by blood, friendship, or work, those who became part of Gail’s circle were welcomed into her heart.
Gail leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and family that will live on through the many lives she touched. Though her passing was sudden and her absence will be deeply felt, the memories she created, the laughter she shared, and the love she gave will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew her.
Gail is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Cody Sands; her seven children: Twila Sands (Brett), Amber Sands (Will), Zachary Sands (Shanel), Ronald Sorenson (Carla), Rachelle Olson (Chad), Cassandra Walker (Justin), and Candice Hanna (Christian); and her 21 beloved grandchildren.
She is also survived by her parents, Ruth and Leonard Knight; her siblings, Donna Shumacher (Kevin), Val Schrader (Shawn), Ken Pittendreigh (Kim), and Kevin Pittendreigh (Shelly); her mother-in-law, Florence Bartrop; her siblings-in-law, Clarence Sands (Konnie), Sam Sands, and Phebe Sands, Myrna (Derek) Goodwill; her aunt, Patsy Stange; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
Gail was predeceased by her father, John Pittendreigh; her uncle, Herman Stange; her grandparents, Lottie and Dave Bird, and Charles and Irene Pittendreigh; and her fathers-in-law, Bill Sands and Wayne Bartrop.
Though Gail’s time with us ended far too soon, we take comfort in knowing that she has entered into her Lord’s loving arms. Her laughter will echo in our memories, her love will continue through her family, and her spirit will remain with all those fortunate enough to have known her.
A Celebration of Life will be held November 1 at 12 noon at the Caroline Community Center with interment and lunch to follow.
In keeping with Gail’s loving and compassionate spirit, donations may be made to the Fostering Hope Society or ROAR in her memory.
